Our new Shenhui 75W laser cutter.
Our new Shenhui 75W CNC laser cutter

Well this came as a bit of a curved ball, we most certainly did not expect such a gift.

Until now we have relied on JohnC for all of our laser cutting but the other week a Shed supporter that we did not know about suddenly offered us this fantastic addition to our capabilities absolutely free, gratis and for nothing. The main problem that we have is the usual one when a large piece of kit arrives - where the hell are we going to put it?

Now, having spoken with Kevin who is just as keen to use it as we are, he has agreed to think carefully where it could be permanently housed. It really needs an outside wall for fume extraction. The most common material to use is plywood which is normally fine quality beech sheets laminated with an epoxy resin. This gives off nasty and potentially dangerous fumes when being cut by the laser.

For now, we have found a spot in which to store the machine while the big problem is resolved. Once it has John C will need to impart his magic which will be needed to adjust, calibrate and drive the machine. Once it is working, we will have to involve Bob the donor to the inaugural cut or is it burn? We will need just two or three members who would be prepared to undergo fairly rigorous training on the use of the cutter and take on the responsibility of operating it. Due to the safety side, operation will be limited to just these members but there is no reason why as many members as want to can learn how to design for it, just like the 3D printer.
